About The Greenbriar Boys
There was a seat at the table for bluegrass in the folk-dominated Greenwich Village of the early '60s, and it was occupied by guitarist John Herald, banjoist Bob Yellin, and multi-instrumentalist Eric Weissberg (later replaced by Paul Prestopino and then Ralph Rinzler), aka the Greenbriar Boys. Rubbing shoulders with luminaries like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan and playing at Gerde's Folk City and in Washington Square Park, the trio approached bluegrass with an urban flair and, like the Dillards, bridged the genre's first generation with the more openly progressive element of the '70s. After several excellent albums for Vanguard, the trio went through a spate of lineup changes before breaking up in 1967.
