Album Review

Carlo Atti is a fine young Italian tenor saxophonist whose style and sound sometimes hint at Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt, although he generally sounds fairly original. A straight-ahead bebopper, Atti works well here with the Hal Galper Trio (comprised of pianist Galper, bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer Steve Ellington). All of the music on Atti's Red CD has viable chord changes, with the only unfamiliar pieces being Wes Montgomery's "Douje" and the title cut, a blues by Galper. Little unexpected occurs, but there are also no disappointments. the highlights include Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now," "Groovin' High," "Like Someone In Love" and "When Sunny Gets Blue." Atti proves able to play fairly lengthy solos without running out of ideas, and his phrases flow smoothly into each other. A fine effort.
