Album Review

The Lebrón Brothers, one of the finest and most enduring Latin soul bands, continue to heap legitimacy upon the idiom in this late offering. From "La Envidia y la Tumba" on through to the end, En la Union is so embarrassingly good it's depressing; so much other Latin soul is seriously inferior. The conga, cowbell, and slightly hoarse voice of Pablo Lebrón are all right up front, while the horns, piano, and chorus appropriately stick to providing texture. Consistent, unique, warm (almost folkloric like Arsenio Rodriguez), and beautifully recorded, the music of the Lebrón brothers can be enjoyed from the first cut to the last, repeatedly.

The Lebrón Brothers are one of New York, USA salsa’s most original and distinctive sounding bands. They were formed in the mid-60s and co-led by José Lebrón (piano, arranger, composer, lead and chorus singer) and Angel Lebrón (bass, arranger, composer, lead and chorus singer/cuatro - which is a small 10-string guitar). The brothers were born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York City, USA. The band made their recording debut in 1967 when the R&B/Latin-fusion style called boogaloo...
