Album Review

Bitterness and regret become bigger factors in Wainwright's albums in the 80s. The best of these (also recommended: I'm Alright and More Love Songs), this collection shows tremendous personal insight, continuing passion for children (Wainwright may have written more about children than any contemporary singer/songwriter), and a brave humor, holding out against the little defeats of middle age.

Loudon Wainwright III grew up in the town of Bedford in wealthy Westchester County north of New York City, the son of Loudon S. Wainwright Jr., a writer and editor at Life magazine and a direct descendant of colonial governor Peter Stuyvesant. Wainwright became a folk singer/songwriter in the late '60s, singing humorous and nakedly honest autobiographical songs.
