Album Review

Riding the crest of the Canadian surf revival spawned by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, Calgary's Huevos Rancheros do the seemingly impossible: remain true to the traditions of surf, à la The Ventures, but kick up the tempo and volume at the same time. "What a Way to Run a Railroad" opens with a blistering riff that sounds like Motorhead, and then goes into a supercharged surf instrumental that would do traditionalists proud. The whole affair is musically similar to Man or Astroman?, save for the fact that a bunch of B-movie snippets aren't dropped into the mix. Good playing, good fun.

Huevos Rancheros formed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1990. Original members of the instrumental rock & roll-type group were bassist Graham Evans, guitarist Brent J. Cooper, and a drummer by the name of Rich E. Evans later deserted the lineup and bassist Tommy Kennedy stepped in to replace him. Over the next decade, Huevos Rancheros would record a long list of singles, music videos, and several albums....
