Album Review

Following their English- (On the Rocks, Dream On) and French-language (Respire) albums, Grenzenlos is the first release to be recorded in German from the Belgian choir Scala and conductor/pianist siblings the Kolacny Brothers. Featuring 12 of their unique choral interpretations of contemporary pop/rock songs, the 2005 LP includes cover versions of Kraftwerk's "Das Modell," Die Toten Hosen's "Hier Kommt Alex," and Echt's "Du Tragst Keine Liebe in Dir," alongside the lead single, a reworking of MIA's "Hungrigez Herz." ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi

A Belgian girls choir with a modern rock twist, Scala held their first rehearsal in April 1996, when the group's membership topped out at 18 singers. Brothers Steven and Stijn Kolacny (pianist and conductor, respectively) treated the group like a classical ensemble at first, and Scala's ranks grew as the girls won a number of awards, including the title of Belgium's Choir of the Year in 1999.
