Indigo Girls sure doesn’t sound like a major-label debut—it’s way too mature, polished and self-assured. Young Amy Ray and Emily Saliers announce their precociousness with opener “Closer to Fine”, a poetic, harmony-driven number that was inescapable throughout 1989. The Indigos also show off their deep knowledge of folk-rock history: Featuring early supporter Michael Stipe on backing vocals, “Kid Fears” balances wounded emotions and inner strength in ways that recall Sandy Denny’s most sublime ballads.
