Album Review

The Any Day Will Be Fine single is highly recommended. Finally! Here's a band that puts out only one version of its new singles, and insures that its two B-sides will be of similar terrific class to its LP tracks! McCutcheon's "Krazy Koz" is kind of like a country-streaked version of Teenage Fanclub's "Everything Flows," with banjo, piano, pedal steel, and Neil Young lead. Beautifully produced, finely crafted, and that pedal steel is the flavor that seals the juice! Then "Always Right" is a harmonica-spiced, piano-seasoned, and trumpet-enhanced chamber pop tune that also really should have made the LP. "No you don't know how to fight," frowns Halstead. You're right, we surrender. Excellent release! However, both these tracks were generously tacked on to the end of the U.S. version of Excuses for Travellers.

Between the recording and release of Slowdive's ambient Pygmalion, Neil Halstead began writing more song-based tunes to occupy down time. Weeks after being dropped by Creation, Halstead and the remaining members of Slowdive (Rachel Goswell and Ian McCutcheon) recorded six demos within three days, much of it live without overdubs.
