Album Review

The mood stays cool as Bixler leads his group through an all-original set. Each tune is traditional in structure — head, solos, recapitulation — and easy to absorb, though the horns often play the themes in intervals of a second to add a little edge; the double-time episode written into the title track's motif is especially effective in setting up a two-tiered rhythm approach in the blowing section. The improvised lines are almost always played legato and never overblown, with Andy Watson underscoring this quality through some spare and tasty work, occasionally on hand drums or with mallets on toms and washy cymbals. The end result is a well-crafted, intelligent set that attentive listeners will appreciate as much as those who prefer their jazz to drone in the background. ~ Robert L. Doerschuk, Rovi
