Carol Douglas' soft, reedy vocals haven't impressed everyone, but she could sing disco floaters á la "Midnight Love Affair," as well as anyone with her cute sexy voice. Her vocal shortcomings, however, become painfully obvious on uptempo numbers. She just didn't have the power of a Gloria Gaynor or a Donna Summer to deliver on "Headline News" and similar disco boogies. Douglas was more at-home singing European-style disco (side one) than the rougher, more demanding U.S. disco (side two). [The 1994 reissue contains one bonus track.]

On the surface she seems like your typical one-hit wonder disco star, but dig deeper and you'll find a beautiful diva with show business in her blood. Douglas was born April 4, 1948, in Brooklyn, NY. Her mother, Minnie Newsome, sang in some of the many jazz clubs in the Apollo theater area — she was the inspiration for Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher" — and the late, great R&B singer Sam Cooke was a cousin....
