Rhythm 'n' Moves

Capital Lights keep the accent on the positive while adding more electronica elements to their sound on Rhythm ‘N’ Moves. After a near-breakup, the Oklahoma foursome returns with a batch of (mostly) breezy tunes tempered by the band’s Christian faith. Lead singer Bryson Phillips comes across as an uneasy romantic in yearning power pop numbers like “Coldfront Heatstroke,” “Don’t Drop Dead, Juliet,” and “Save the Last Dance.” Guitarists Brett Admire and Jonathan Williams provide plenty of melodic firepower, with the album’s title tune showing off their riffage to best advantage. Balancing such guitar-centric tunes are keyboard-dominated tracks like “Newport Parties” and “Caroline." The boisterous mood slows down a bit for “Hey Little One,” a ballad with a compassionate message. Though boy/girl scenarios are the major focus here, “Honey Don’t Jump” and “Gotta Have Love” (the latter featuring ex–Hawk Nelson frontman Jason Dunn on vocals) have a God-centered perspective. Brash and cheeky but wholesome at heart, Capital Lights show definite mainstream crossover potential here.
