Album Review

On their first record in three years, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, with new guitarist Jim Dalton, turn in a 13-song set of basic rock & roll party songs, with anthemic singalong choruses, edgy guitars, and a heartland rock feel. Oddly, Unida Cantina's best songs are two mariachi-tinged tunes — "Marie" and the instrumental title track — along with a dubby, reggae-infused number called "Today Belongs to the Light."

Formed from the ashes of the Refreshments, Dead Hot Workshop, and the Gin Blossoms, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers emerged in 1999 as a Southwestern supergroup specializing in literate, pop-tinged Americana. The Arizona-bred frontman Roger Clyne had previously established himself with the Refreshments during the post-grunge heyday of the '90s.
