Album Review

Although the Celis Sisters hail from Colombia, they're much more interested in Jamaican reggae, recording their eponymous debut album in that country with the assistance of producer Philip "Fatis" Burrell and a group of musicians including Sly Dunbar and Dean Fraser. While the production sometimes sounds low budget, Burrell makes the most of what he's got, throwing in subtly odd sounds and textures behind the cheap synths. The sisters cover Bob Marley twice ("No Woman, No Cry" and a Spanish-language version of "Is This Love," titled "Es Amor"), and perform reggae versions of Latin standards like "Guantanamera" and Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va," which makes for an intriguing meeting of musical cultures.
