Album Review

Lead Jones Girls vocalist Shirley Jones' sophomore effort is a set of delightful urban contemporary ballads and inspiring mid-tempo numbers. Often times, the lyrics are clichéd, but Jones' simple-yet-rich delivery has a way of invoking new meaning into the most formulaic of passages. It can also be argued that the arrangements, which are primarily programmed and don't contain much authentic instrumentation, are not particularly distinguishable from one another. However, their simplicity lacks the annoying gimmicks of other mid-'90s urban contemporary releases, while still supplying the capable vocalist with an up-to-date and youthful sound. Undoubtedly, it's the combination of warm melodies and soulful vocals that sets a distinctive mood. Of the 12 tracks, the standouts are "Perfect Love," a joyous — albeit not preachy — celebration of a higher power; the affirmative up-tempo jaunt "I Ain't Going Nowhere"; and the romantic "I've Been Expecting You." Though there isn't a song here with an immediate hook like those of "Do You Get Enough Love" or "Last Night" from Jones' previous effort (1986's Always in the Mood), the end result here is equally pleasing in the singer's hearty performances and the solid structure of the songs. ~ Justin M.
