About Arnold Bax

Arnold Bax (1883-1953) was a British composer of post-Romantic music, strongly influenced by the impressionism of Debussy and inspired by Celtic legends. His most popular works date from his youth, and the atmospheric tone poems Tintagel, In the Fairy Hills, and The Garden of Fand are typical of his early style. Bax also composed seven symphonies, several concertos, and pieces of chamber music, as well as choral and vocal works, demonstrating a rigorous approach in his maturity. Overshadowed for most of his career by Elgar and Vaughan Williams, Bax achieved fame late in life and was knighted in 1942.
