About Selector Dub Narcotic

Indie rock legend Calvin Johnson uses the moniker Selector Dub Narcotic for his party-friendly excursions into dub, disco, and hip-hop. The Olympia, Washington native formed Dub Narcotic Sound System (named after Dub Narcotic, the analog recording studio located in his basement) in the mid-'90s. Consisting of a revolving lineup of K Records regulars including members of Lois, the Gossip, and Tiger Trap, the group released five full-lengths (including a collaboration with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) and over a dozen singles and EPs that explored funk, trip-hop, rap, and other styles. A 1998 K compilation bore the name Selector Dub Narcotic, and Johnson used the alias for his eclectic DJ sets as well as the B-side dub versions he created on 7"s released as part of K's Dub Narcotic Disco Plate series, including singles by Atlas Sound, City Center, Mount Eerie, and others. In 2016, Johnson released Selector Dub Narcotic's full-length debut, This Party Is Just Getting Started. ~ Paul Simpson
