About Sunburned Hand of the Man

Somewhat inaccurately lumped in with the "New Weird America" bands of the early-2000s psych-roots scene, Boston's Sunburned Hand of the Man certainly qualify as weird, but their similarities with the freak folkies end there. Numbering three to twelve members at any given time--including founders John Moloney, Robert Thomas, and Rich Pontius--and choosing a largely improvisational approach, SHOFTM embrace elements of noise, free jazz, drone, space rock, doom metal, and even old-time to create a shambolic and all encompassing idea of psychedelia. Formed in 1994 as drone-punk trio Sh*t Spangled Banner, the avant collective self-released their first CDR in 1997, and went on to become one of the oddest globetrotting acts of the early part of the new millennium.
