Summer In The Shop CNC Router Tips Podcast Episode 72 Season 2: CNCRT72S2

Making things more confortable in the shop.

Summer in the shop has been busy and hot. Finding ways to make things more comfortable in the shop was my priority this summer. So I started tackling some projects I had been putting off.

When some florescent bulbs stopped working it was time to change them. But while I was at it I decided to install new LED bulbs to replace the florescent bulbs.LED bulbs have come way down in price and installing them can really drop your electrical bill and also really brighten up the shop.

Bill Griggs discusses his recent trip to Eastec conference (see episode 71). He also talked about the weekly Live CNC Router Mixers on Zoom every Wednesday at 7PM ET. Members get together to talk about CNC Routers and their project. Guest have included Phil DeCarlo The exotic Woodworker, Bull Shananigan from The Make Group, Mark Lindsay (Episode 63) from Mark Lindsay CNC, and Ned Gligic.

Talley Boatwright recently posted some pictures of his new vacuum table, which got Bill thinking about adding a vacuum table to his CNC Router. Bill picked up a vacuum pump motor from Oneida Air and began making plans to install it using some gaskets and advice from Alex Palm of Allstar CNC.

Vectric Ltd. is hosting an online users group meeting on October 5th.
Lastly, we remind people that it is time to get started on your seasonal CNC projects for the Holidays.

Exploring Eastec 2023 Manufacturing Technology Trade Show.

The Eastec Manufacturing Technology Trade show is one of my favorite events. Being able to see the latest machine tools, fixture and accessories in person is a rarity in the NorthEast. The Eastec show gives us the chance to see equipment from many of the major vendors. In this episode Bill Griggs discusses his recent trip to Eastec and the dream machines he saw including AvidCNC, Chiron Group, Takamaz, Kitamura and more.

Hold It Right There: CNC Router Tips Podcast Episode 69 Season 2: CNCRT69S2

How will you hold it, right there? In episode 69 of the CNC Router Tips podcast, host Bill Griggs examines Work holding solutions for CNC Router Tables. How you hold your work piece securely to the work table is crucial to your success. Hold It there fast and secure for repeatability.

There are many types of workholding solutions used with CNC Router tables. These solutions include the following:

Vises: Vises are a versatile workholding option that can clamp workpieces of varying sizes and shapes. They come in various configurations, including standard vises, multi-axis vises, and self-centering vises.Clamps: Clamps are a simple and effective workholding solution that can be used to secure workpieces to the CNC router table. They come in different sizes and shapes, such as C-clamps, toggle clamps, and screw clamps.Vacuum Tables: Vacuum tables use suction to hold workpieces in place, providing a secure grip without the need for clamps or vises. They are ideal for holding thin or irregularly shaped workpieces and can be customized to fit specific job requirements.T-Slot Tables: T-slot tables have a series of slots that allow for the use of T-nuts, which can be used to secure workpieces in place. They are versatile and can accommodate a wide range of workpiece sizes and shapes.Fixture Plates: Fixture plates are used to hold multiple workpieces at once, increasing efficiency and productivity. They are typically made of aluminum or steel and can be customized with various hole patterns and clamping options.Collet Chucks: Collet chucks are used to hold round or cylindrical workpieces securely in place. They come in various sizes and can be used with different types of collets, including spring collets and dead-length collets.Pallet Systems: Pallet systems allow for quick and easy workpiece changes, reducing downtime and increasing efficiency. They consist of a series of pallets that can be loaded with workpieces off the machine, allowing for continuous machining operations.Painters Tape and CA Glue provide a surprisingly strong bond that will hold a workpiece to the spoil board.

LET YOUR IDEAS FLY CNC Router Tips Podcast Episode 68 Season 2: CNCRT68S2

In episode 68 of the CNC Router Tips podcast, host Bill Griggs wants you to let your ideas fly. He discusses the versatility of CNC router tables and how they can be used to make a wide variety of products, including gym equipment, backboards for ambulances, and more. The show answers listener questions related to CNC router tables, software, hardware, web hosting, and business. Bill talks about his experience with CNC routers, beginning with making radio control aircraft with laser cut parts before discovering the advantages of using a CNC router to cut thicker pieces of wood. He reflects on how his business has evolved over the years and the importance of adaptability in entrepreneurship. Bill shares a recent experience flying radio control airplanes with a group of fellow hobbyists and how their conversation about needed accessories inspired him to consider using his CNC router to make products for the hobbyist market.

CNC routers are making a splash in the world of RC planes and jets. Bill mentions how CNC Router Tables can be used to create customized carrying cases for the fragile R/C helicopters that enthusiasts use. This leads to a discussion about the benefits of solving one problem and how it can lead to the creation of a whole line of products. One of Bill's favorite YouTuber named Remy RC, uses 3D printed molds and CNC routers to create scale model jets with fantastic results. His results are so good that noted actor, film producer and director, Tyler Perry asked Remy to build a plane for one of his movies and do some conversion work on his models using CNC routers.Key takeaways:

Sample of AI Generated G-Code Query

Prompt: write g-code to move a 1/4" bit from the starting point at x0,y0,z1.0 to a relative position +2" in the X direction and +1" in the Y direction. Plunge the bit down to -.25", and climb cut a two inch square. Retract the tool bit to a safe distance and return to the starting point.

    Response:

Assuming that the machine is already set up and the workpiece is properly clamped, here is the G-code to move the 1/4" bit from the starting point at x0,y0,z1.0 to a relative position +2" in the X direction and +1" in the Y direction, plunge the bit down to -.25", climb cut a two-inch square, retract the tool bit to a safe distance and return to the starting point.

    G90 ; Absolute positioning
    G20 ; Units in inches
    G0 X2 Y1 Z1.0 ; Move to the starting point at x0,y0,z1.0 to a relative position +2" in the X direction and +1" in the Y direction
G1 Z-0.25 F5 ; Plunge the bit down to -.25" at a feedrate of 5 inches per minute
    G1 X2.5 Y1.5 F10 ; Climb cut a two-inch square at a feedrate of 10 inches per minute
G1 X2 Y1 Z1.0 F5 ; Retract the tool bit to a safe distance and return to the starting point

Please note that the feedrates and tool speeds specified in this code are just examples and may need to be adjusted based on the specific characteristics of the machine and the material being cut.
