Entertaining way of filling in the gaps
You will not generally find detailed backgrounds for every character in a fantasy world. This interlude of short stories is a wonderful way of providing additional background information in an entertaining manner without bogging down the core storyline. I particularly enjoyed the backstory for Tempus, the faithful mastiff companion of Princess Anna who plays a very large, but largely voiceless role in the novels.

A series of short stories to bridge past to present and set the stage for the future tales in the world of Merceria. The various POV of each story teller was genius.
