Opinião do álbum

Brennan is a skilled and sensitive musician who apparently attracts the same; the personnel here includes some of the British Isles' finest free improvisers, including notably the vocalist Julie Tippetts, who gives voice to the poetry set to music that makes up a good portion of this album. For the most part, Brennan alternates composed and improvised tracks. Hence, a structured piece like "No Go Area" (a suitably macabre poem chanted by Tippetts and supported by percussionist Chris Cutler on brushes, with improvised interjections by the others), is followed by "No Go Echo," a free improvisation that expounds on the previous track. With a winking reference to Edgar Allan Poe (Brennan calls this "The POEms PrOjEct"), the leader integrates the mostly contemporary poetry with the lyrically abstract music to good effect. The playing is on a very high level; the execution of Brennan's partially notated scores is reasonably sharp, and the improvisations are winning. There's a certain dryness to much of the playing that's appropriate to the text. Brennan's an excellent player fond of modal harmonies, though he's certainly conversant with non-tonal approaches. In the realm of free improv, it's fairly unusual to encounter such a focused concept for a recording. Brennan's strategy, and the sensitivity with which he presents the spoken word, sets this album apart.

Pianist and composer John Wolf Brennan was born in Dublin, Ireland, and has been widely acclaimed as an outstanding musician. His compositions feature music rich in atonal textures, and cover a wide spectrum of musical...
