Opinião do álbum

The widely heralded recordings made of Duke Ellington & His Orchestra during a 1940 concert in Fargo, ND, have been justifiably praised for their historic value as well as for the surprisingly good sound obtained by a pair of young amateur engineers with a portable disc cutter. Both the soloists and Ellington's unique-sounding blend of reeds and brass are very distinct. Some of these tracks previously appeared on the Jazz Society label, followed by a Book-of-the Month Club set, and all of them appeared on the now-defunct Vintage Jazz Classics, but this latest version tops them all for sound quality. Prominent soloists include Ben Webster, Jimmy Blanton, Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, Tricky Sam Nanton, and, of course, Duke Ellington; this concert also marks the debut of trumpeter Ray Nance, who was taking over for the recently departed Cootie Williams. Among the many highlights are memorable versions of "Ko Ko," "Mood Indigo," "Harlem Airshaft," "Warm Valley," "Caravan," "Sepia Panorama," "Rockin' in Rhythm," "Sophisticated Lady," and "Cotton Tail," as well as several numbers that are either unique to this concert or were rarely heard on stage. Newly expanded liner notes and the return of some of the photos taken during the actual concert are improvements over the previous CD reissue. There are only two minor complaints about this set. First, it has a rather flimsy outer box in place of the solid cardboard boxes accompanying similar boxed sets, but shipping costs from overseas were very likely a factor in this decision. Second, many of the photos from the concert included in the Book-of-the-Month Club LP set were unfortunately omitted from this package. This two-CD set is an essential acquisition for Duke Ellington collectors.

Duke Ellington was the most important composer in the history of jazz as well as being a bandleader who held his large group together continuously for almost 50 years. The two aspects of his career were related; Ellington used his band as a musical laboratory for his new compositions and shaped his writing specifically to showcase the talents of his bandmembers, many of whom remained with him for long periods. Ellington also wrote film scores and stage musicals, and several of his instrumental works...
