The Charles Mingus two-fer, Pithecanthropus Erectus + The Clown, brings together two of the bassist's albums from the late '50s. These are Mingus' two big breakthrough albums that cemented his name as a jazz innovator, bandleader, and musical visionary. Released in 1956, Pithecanthropus Erectus found Mingus tailoring his arrangements to the musicians in his band, here including altoist Jackie McLean and pianist Mal Waldron. Similarly, The Clown, released in 1957, featured tight yet idiosyncratic arrangements that still left plenty of room for Mingus and his band to stretch out.
