Following the success of the Soldiers, seven-piece vocal group Chelsea Pensioners are the latest former military act to make a foray into the charts. Its members, who had previously served in the Second World War, Palestine, and Northern Ireland had an average age of 79 when they signed a record deal with Rhino Records in 2010. Famed for their distinctive scarlet coats and tricorne hats, David Poultney, Michael Allen, Malcolm Smart, Dennis Shiels, Thomas Fox, John Shuter, and Paddy Fox were put together by producer Nick Patrick. Their debut album, Men in Scarlet, included renditions of "White Cliffs of Dover," "Goodnight Sweetheart," and "A Nightingale Sang," and featured contributions from Katherine Jenkins, Dame Vera Lynn, and Britain's Got Talent finalist Janey Cutler. Released in the week of Remembrance Sunday in 2010, the album charted at number 14, while all its proceeds were donated to an appeal to refurbish The Royal Hospital in Chelsea, where all seven members live. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
