Episode 37: Internet Resources for Filmmaking

Episode 37: Internet Resources for Filmmaking

This week Matt and I talk about resources online related to filmmaking. Some are paid content sites such as Shane Hurlbut’s Inner Circle and the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, but we also talk about free sources like Indy Mogul and other YouTube Channels.

The short film this week is the second that we’ve reviewed by filmmaker Tofiq Rzayev. We look at how his technique has improved and his style refined.

I can’t come up with idioms for my life this episode.

    Episode 36: Cardinal Rules

    Episode 36: Cardinal Rules

We turn to Reddit this week to get thoughts on the cardinal rules of short filmmaking. Then we continue onto a short by Derek Dubois called Sinners. I’ve included an article this week that counters what we discussed at the head of the show. You’ll find it in the links below.

The theme of this episode and the joke in the title were only revealed way after recording.

    Episode 35: C Stands

    Episode 35: C Stands

We start this episode talking about what’s on our gear wishlist. This week’s short film characterizes the medium, and would be standard fare at festivals. Our initially cynical expectations were crushed by a punch line that made us appreciate the attention to detail and finesse that went into this short, and forced us to watch it again. As always, but it bears repeating, watch the short before listening, and then join the conversation on twitter.

Episode 34: Story Time Part 1

Episode 34: Story Time Part 1

This episode starts out with Matt and I reminiscing about the past and tell the first part of our journey into filmmaking.

Next, we discuss the film of the night, La Vie en Rose, by Patrick Hoffacker. We give some practical advice for new filmmakers looking to improve in all facets of filmmaking. We’ve been there, you’ve been there, and Patrick’s there. The first films you make aren’t the best, but are the greatest and only way to truly learn.

Episode 33: Reboots and remakes and retellings! Oh my!

Episode 33: Reboots and remakes and retellings! Oh my!

We stick to a theme this episode: Remakes.

First we discuss a very topical video from the YouTube channel Counter Arguments which discusses remakes in Hollywood. It’s a not-so-subtle response to the overall backlash against Ghostbusters. Have we reached peak remake? I’d say we haven’t, if only because the studios are still making money.

Today’s short is also in the realm of remakes/retellings. We look at a fan film from the Terminator universe called Sex, Lies, and Terminators .

Joe gets very confused about who directed the remake of The Magnificent Seven, so just ignore him when he talks about Quentin Tarantino.

    Episode 32: Dumpster Fire

    Episode 32: Dumpster Fire

This week we talk about some other podcasts we listen to. Some are related to filmmaking, some aren’t, but they all make us more rounded individuals.

Today’s film, STALL, comes to us from Devon Dresback and Bret Kalmbach, and was submitted through SaturdayNightShorts.com. An award-winning film that doesn’t play around, STALL is a thrilling example of what one can do with a single location and a limited budget. We are slowly introduced to 4 characters stuck within a stall–never seeing more than a few pairs of feet. This gives us a feelings of anxiety and claustrophobia. The short had a good concept that was well executed.

There’s a very short behind the scenes video that Matt and I didn’t find until after we recorded (because we’re dummies), but I’ve linked it below and it answers some questions we had. It impressed us as well.
