By turns melancholy and joyful, In a Perfect World is immediately appealing due to the young band’s sophisticated suite of influences; the 11-track debut balances the earnest spirit of early U2, the arena-filling grandeur of Coldplay and the melodic craftsmanship of Oasis. But for all the familiar fragments, inspired guitar-based singles like “One Day” and “After the Fall” are delivered with enough invigorating energy to frame Kodaline as one of the year’s most distinctive rock newcomers.
