Album Review

Seemingly nonexistent in the eyes of American pop culture — yet continually boasting some of the nation's highest grossing concerts — Canadian rockers the Tragically Hip have managed to secure themselves legendary status both above and underground while remaining almost complete anonymous. Like any good band of the people, the Hip know that their fans are their lifeblood, so in compiling their first ever "greatest hits" collection, they left it up to the listeners. Chosen online at their website, the 34 remastered tracks that make up Yer Favorites — two of which, the ballsy "No Threat" and the wistful "New Maybe," are brand new — may not go deep enough for longtime followers, but for anyone who has spent the better part of their musical life wondering what all of the fuss was about, this is their chance to get schooled. Poetic yet accessible, raw yet grandiose, the Tragically Hip have often been lumped unfairly into the jam band circuit, when in reality they have far more in common with an act like Pearl Jam than they do Phish. They're an arena bar band maintaining the rawness of a juke joint amid the thunderous applause of 150,000 pairs of hands, and while their brand of heartland rock may be steeped in the Great White North, it's appeal is universal.

Customer Reviews

Simply put.... the best!

The Hip are quite simply the best rock band out there. The fact that the rest of the world has not really discovered them is mind baffling to me. The music flows so effortlessly from this group of musicians, and time after time, I find myself getting chills at the way Gordie delivers his lyrics with unbelievable passion. Nothing beats cruising along the 401 on a crisp summer night, windows down, and the Hip blasting out of your speakers. This collection has the best of the best, but I really don't know how they ever managed to get it narrowed down to only 37 songs!

Definition of an Icon

Truely the definition of Iconic Rock and Roll, the Tragically Hip have been belting out tune and croon since the early 80's. Gordon Downie's eclectic and often sporadic lyrics lull the listener into a multitude of inspirations and additudes while listening to Canada's #1 Rock and Roll sesnation. WIth a lybrary spanning 2 decades, a fan base that is universal in Canada, yet almost unseen in the United States, it's no surprise that they have maintained an integrity and unique vision in their song making. Yer Favorites is the most expansive collection of the Hips music that die hard fans already have, bandwagon jumpers will have no need to seek more, and new listeners will be pulled into the deep and rich imagery in every one of the Hips ballads. Having seen the Hip live 4 times personally, and having many a summer memory in the convertable at Sylvan Lake shouting out 'New Orleans is Sinkin' with the guys down Lakeshore Drive, all the way to bar toon favorites like 'Boots or Hearts', the range of the Hip's reach is immense. This collection truely has it all.

The Quintessential Hip Album

Does the Tragically Hip matter anymore? Are they out-dated, out of tune, or just plain whacked-out? To know the present, you must know the past. The history of the Tragically Hip is definitely worth listening to and this album is no exception. Yes, debates will ensue about particular songs not being included, but that is what makes TTH fans the die-hard fans that they are proud to be. I am personally satisfied with this collection but am truly satisified with their box-set titled HIPEPOPYNMOUS. Perhaps the most gratifying aspect of the box set is the cost. At only $55, it is a definite value. To answer the first question, TTH is still relevant, perhaps more than ever in the manufactured music of today. To the TTH, keep on doing what you are doing and the loyal fans will stay loyal.

While hugely popular in their native Canada, the Tragically Hip found the global charts continually resistant to their blues-influenced pop fare. Formed in 1983 in Kingston, Ontario, the band included comprised childhood friends Gordon Downie (vocals), Bobby Baker (guitar), Paul Langlois (guitar), Gord Sinclair (bass), and Johnny Fay (drums). The bandmembers took their name from a Michael Nesmith video entitled Elephant Parts, and focused on making a name for themselves on the local scene during...
