iTunes Review

A cohesive concept album about the struggle to conquer Valhalla with swords and honor, Surtur Rising is also a take-no-prisoners sonic explosion. The mighty guitars of "War of the Gods," punishing death-march "Destroyers of the Universe," emotional wreckage of "The Last Stand of Frej," and doomsaying chant of "Wrath of the Norseman" are Amon Amarth in their purest form. From start to finish, some of their most memorable riffs and tunes shore up these mythological images of wartime valor.

ok

Under my expectations.... War of the Gods and Slaves of fear are freaking amazing though

SURTUR RISING!

More of the same

Let me start by saying I really like Amon Amarth and have been a fan for years. When I first heard this was coming out I was really excited, but after hearing it realized it really offers nothing new. They are a great band and have become synonymous with Melodic Death Metal that has viking themes. When I first heard them I loved them. I enjoyed their first few albums, but after getting used to the sound, I started wanting to see thm break out and do something different. As a whole the CD is what you'd expect. Tight music, melodic, viking themes, growled vocals, and it actually very good. But to me at least, the whole viking metal theme is starting to wear thin, and they he made better CDs (With Oden By Our Side). I'd really like to see them try something slightly different lyrically (keep it epic, but try something other than viking mythology and themes). On the other hand I'll give them credit for staying true to their fanbase for so long. That shows a lot of character.
