The evolution of one of Canada's best bands

In the last year I have not only discovered the New Pornographers, I have discovered the unbridled talent of this unique group. This album manages to retain thier history while still injecting a strong fresh sound. Five stars, only because I cant give six.

Canadaian bands rock!!

may they stay together: a beautiful collective of musicians and sound

With talent galore and successful independent careers to boot, I'm always ecstatic when the many members of The New Pornographers come together to craft an album as pleasing as this one. On this album, you'll find the usual boy-girl harmonies, power-pop riffs, slightly cryptic lyrics, and rolling percussion. Added on several tracks is a horn section (The Dap-Kings) and an underlying, but driving pulse of a cello. While often signs of indie-band excess, the cello is all pop-pulse, and purposeful, in "Moves," "Crash Years" and the slightly softer, but elegant "We End Up Together."

While "Your Hands (Together)" and "Crash Years" (even with that PB&Jish whistling) will stick out as immediate favourites, don't overlook "Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk" and "If You Can't See My Mirrors."

For well versed fans, you'll find the album more akin to "Twin Cinema" than to "Challengers" -- a positive I believe.

As for the bonus material, I can't speak to that. I bought the disc, not the download. However you choose to buy it, you won't be disappointed with this purchase.

The Vancouver indie rock supergroup the New Pornographers feature the talents of Zumpano's Carl Newman, the Evaporators' John Collins, Destroyer's Dan Bejar, cartoonist/filmmaker Blaine Thurier, drummer Fisher Rose, and guest vocalist Neko Case. Newman began the band in 1996 as a lark after releasing Zumpano's Goin' Through Changes; one by one, the other members joined the fold, and the New Pornographers' first official rehearsal took place in 1997. By the following year, the group had completed...
