iTunes Review

A poet who ran with the spoken-word crowd, Jill Scott proved her writing skills by helping to pen fellow Philadelphians The Roots’ “You Got Me.” She revisits that plaintive hook and bridge on “The Roots (Interlude),” one of 18 tracks on this stirring debut, which ricochets between soul, hip-hop, and Beat poetry. Scott dazzles with her verbal dexterity and flurry of references: “A Long Walk” incorporates Quran and Bible verses, weed, and “Amazing Grace”; “Love Rain” nods to the sciences. Who is Jill Scott? A force of nature.

You mean you don't know?

One of the best voices in contemporary R&B, period, and proof that most people are deaf! If there was any justice, Scott would occupy a much larger space in the world of popular music than she does. As it stands, she remains undiscovered by most and relies on a strong core of fans who tend to lean towards a funkier sound than what is offered by most R&B "vocalists". And, yes, Scott's music actually does have some rhythm in it, and some blues (don't get me started on the current state of what many term "R&B"). Also check the live album for some killer playing.

Ahh....Jill Scott

I am sooooo pleased to get this album again. I had lost my original copy a few years back and had trouble finding it in CD stores...I guess it was an import or something. This album made me fall in love with Jill Scott. Her brand of R & B is so full of rhythm, funk & humour....it`s unlike any other artist out there to this day. Specifically, this album I believe is her best. I can`t listen to Gettin` In The Way without chuckling...a definite must for your Itunes collection. You won`t be disappointed!

Where have I been?

Just discovering Jill Scott. She has a great voice! A great smile! Depth of character. Fantastic songs! I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

A mature R&B vocalist who excelled most with slower, sensual material ("Slowly, Surely," "I'm Not Afraid," "My Love") and was versatile enough to pack plenty of punch with anthems of pride and self-empowerment ("Golden," "Family Reunion," "Hate on Me"), Jill Scott grew up in north Philadelphia and began her performing career reading her own poetry. She was heard by Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, drummer in the Roots, who invited her to join the band in the studio, resulting in the co-composition "You...
