Album Review

Novillero frontman Rod Slaughter moves past the mod minimalism of his previous band Duotang with Aim Right for the Holes in Their Lives. Embracing power pop harmonies, sunshine pop horn arrangements, and Krautrock-inspired synths, this near-perfect debut is most firmly aligned with fellow Vancouver pop dynamos and Mint labelmates the New Pornographers, sharing their knack for whip-smart melodies and ingratiating choruses. Aim Right for the Holes in Their Lives is a classicist pop record in every sense, recalling the halcyon days of AM radio — virtually every song sounds like a forgotten hit from 1975, extolling virtues like buoyancy and grandeur as though they never went out of style.

Most Pleasant Surprise of 2005

The Hypothesist might be the catchiest single of the year. The band sounds like an amalgam of Spoon and Stereolab with a horn section thrown in for good measure. Good stuff all around.

Best album of 2005 hands down

Why did "the Hypothesist" not get pop radio play? Why why why? It should of been a number one, top of the charts hit. And there are so many other goods tracks, hard to pick a few but The Art of Carrying On, Abbey, Aptitude, Dean. Oh you shallow Dean. You will get your $10 dollars worth out of this, and if not, at least get the hypothesist. Catchy and clever lyrics and melodies that make you want to sing along.

A year later the band re-formed, ultimately losing original member Rusty Matyas to his other band, the Waking Eyes. Eventually featuring the talents of vocalist/keyboardist Rod Slaughter, guitarist Sean...
