Album Review

Tony D.'s first full-length for Grand Central (though he had been producing singles for the label for several years) is that rare work of instrumental hip-hop — an album of unvaried mid-tempo beats and stoned grooves which actually succeeds despite the lack of rapping. The addition of beatmeisters Spikey T, Mr. Scruff, and Buffy Brox make Pound for Pound a satisfying success.

German-Libanese rapper Tony D, also known as Tony Damage (he was born Muhamed Ayad in Berlin, Germany), is part of the Aggro Berlin group. Growing up in Berlin-Kreuzberg, his interest in rap music developed when he heard mix tapes by Cypress Hill and Ice Cube at the age of 10. Several years later, he became part of Berlin Crime under the alias "Drell One". He then befriended rappers Sido and B-Tight and joined the hip-hop group Die Sekte.
