iTunes Editors' Notes

Needtobreathe’s fourth studio full-length is the product of touring nonstop for two solid years while promoting 2009’s successful The Outsiders. With 2011’s The Reckoning, residual wanderlust can be heard from song to song as the South Carolina quartet traverses various musical styles like it's passing through different American states. After a subdued intro, “Oohs and Ahhs” rocks out with loud rootsy tones, as if the brothers Rinehart had been taking lessons from the brothers Followill (of Kings of Leon). (The incredible jam at the end does well to translate Needtobreathe’s live prowess.) “Drive All Night” is a similar standout, rocking with the emotional urgency of a Bruce Springsteen hit while retaining a youthful intensity on par with L.A. roots-rockers Dawes. Things simmer down in the somber ballad “A Place Only You Can Go,” one of the band’s best-penned love songs, before following with “Slumber,” a triumphant folk-rock tune that recalls Cat Stevens’ heyday.

More Than Music

My god. The Reckoning is amazing. I was expecting greatness, but this album is beautifully incredible. This album makes you so thankful for the memories you will make while listening to these songs, for the happiness it will bring to you on gloomy days, and for making you feel blessed just by listening. NEEDTOBREATHE is truly unbelievable. They are something different. When you hear their music it’s so powerful and beautiful that it changes you. It’s more than a melody and some lyrics, it’s a clear passion that radiates out of every single song, and hits you like a wrecking ball. They have the power to make you the saddest person on Earth for 3 minutes, but then they bring you back, and you’re surrounded but such love and tranquility that you just lose yourself. Give them a chance. You will never regret it.

The Reckoning

Another great serving of southern? rockasoulbilly? outside of the box- rock with some pretty unique twists. A great example of what can happen when you stay true to your own personal musical vision....needtobreathe joins the thoughtful rockstar ranks of U2 and Mumford and Sons.
