The Poet's Dead

The Poet's Dead

With each album, this Regina-based outfit seems to get closer to noisy indie-pop perfection. With the 2010 album Breaking Hearts, the band crafted some of the finest boy/girl harmonies since John Doe and Exene stopped singing together. The Poet's Dead, our Editors' Choice, continues the trajectory with a collection of soaring, buzzing pop music sweetened by big melodies. There's contemplation under all the joy, as evidenced on songs like "I'm a Killer" and "Saint." But where the band truly excels is on the more victorious, upbeat tracks, which combine hazy waves of feedback over more exuberant vocals. See "Run" and the title track for evidence.
