Album Review

Drawn almost entirely from her Argo/Chess recordings of the '60s (although there are some cuts from the early '70s), Love Songs is a fine selection of romantic music from one of the greatest blues singers of her generation. There are hits here, highlighted by "At Last," but mood overrules chart position, so these 14 songs wind up setting a seductive atmosphere and maintaining it from beginning to end. It's not essential for collectors, although some songs aren't all that easy to come by elsewhere. Instead, it's an album for casual fans, those who like James' style, especially when it's presented in a romantic setting. For these listeners, it's very worthwhile.

Etta James - Love Songs

I hadn't seen it when it was in the theatres.....I hadn't heard any of the soundtrack - but I rented Cadillac Records (with Adrrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Beyoncé Knowles).....MAN! I loved it...... the whole saga was wonderfully done - Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright) plays a major role - and he's great. Eamonn Walker, as Howlin' Wolf, was AWESOME! But this review is about the music of Etta James - which unfortunately only surfaced i nthe last half hour of the movie. Beyoncé was fabulous - both in her presonification and in her phrasing/singing of the James classics. She is what brought me to buy the Etta James Love Songs release......truly, a class act,all around - kudoes to all - Etta - you're fantastic, girl!

Few female R&B stars enjoyed the kind of consistent acclaim Etta James received throughout a career that spanned six decades; the celebrated producer Jerry Wexler once called her "the greatest of all modern blues singers," and she recorded a number of enduring hits, including "At Last," "Tell Mama," "I'd Rather Go Blind," and "All I Could Do Was Cry." At the same time, despite possessing one of the most powerful voices in music, James only belatedly gained the attention of the mainstream audience,...
