Good but different

I like this album alot, but it took me a long time to get into it. It has strange tunes but I eventually appriciated the music. Just because you like SOAD does not mean you will like it. It has a softer less hardcore sound. I however think the album is brilliant.

Mediocre offering from a musical genius

This album has been highly anticipated for months. After Serj's amazing debut solo album, everybody has looked at what Daron Malakian has to offer. Seeing as he wrote 95% of the lyrics for SOAD, it is not unreasonable to expect equally good material with Scars. Also, the music of SOAD was so brilliant, that you would also expect the same thing with this band. Serj certainly didn't disappoint in that department, and he proved to the world that he can write a great album himself. However, Scars is simply disappointing to me at this point. The lyrics are very good, I'm not disappointed with that. However, the melodies are boring, and the music is monotonous. As another review stated, the guitars in "They Say" are laughable, especially compared to the guitars in System. BYOB and Chop Suey alone prove my point. Now, despite that Daron stated dozens of times that this is not System reformed, it does carry the expectations that the music will be at least close to the level that it was. In the end, I think that even if Daron wrote the lyrics, Serj sung the songs, and it was his emotion that made the songs interesting. Scars on Broadway will have to do better than this to get the thumbs up from me.

The Daron Malakian-led rock and metal project formed by the System of a Down guitarist after that band decided to take an extended break following their Mezmerize and Hypnotize releases, Scars on Broadway came to life in late 2005 and early 2006. While some demos appeared (a 2003 collection labeled Ghetto Blaster Rehearsals) that were credited to Scars, Malakian has disavowed the link between the current project and the one on the tape. That disbanded project, which featured Shavo Odadjian and Casey...
