Album Review

Teacher is in the grand protest/poetry/information tradition of Linton Kwesi Johnson and Mutaburaka. It's unapologetic political and cultural commentary with the message its primary component, plus biting sentiments punctuated by minimal production and headlined by arrangements where simple rhythms are the prime musical force. Brown isn't as nimble a verbal improviser as Mutaburaka, but doesn't aim for style points as he discusses everything from drug abuse to African unity, AIDS, religion, the impact of Western imperialism in both Africa and the Americas, and his vision of the future. Not every performer has forgetten reggae's historical protest imperative.
