iTunes Review

This Parisian quartet found and frolicked in that sweet spot between high-minded, cerebral songwriting and unapologetically accessible pop riffs with 2009’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. To follow that brilliant release—which won the GRAMMY® for Best Alternative Album—the band purchased what’s believed to be the recording console used for Michael Jackson’s Thriller and concocted a delightfully fizzy collection. Bankrupt! is clean and crisp like a glass of S.Pellegrino dappled with synth-pop splashes. “Trying to Be Cool” bubbles with an ’80s pop-meets-disco vibe (à la Madonna and Bananarama), while the drums on “Don’t” and “The Real Thing” sound like Purple Rain-era Prince. The title track’s synth labyrinth evaporates after several minutes into a Lennon-esque ballad. Beneath the eclectic musicianship and Thomas Mars’ soaring vocals are effervescent melodies that make the tracks instantly accessible—while growing richer with repeat listens.

I have had time to listen to the full album, and i now believe this is my favorite album of the year so far.It is still early in the year to say that this is my favorite album but its true Phoenix produced a great album. It offers both Alternative and Electro, If you are a fan of their previous album then you already know that this album wont disapoint. It is like nothing ive ever personally listened to before. I give it 5 stars

Vocalist Thomas Mars, bassist Deck d'Arcy, and guitarist Christian Mazzalai were a garage band based out of Mars' house in the suburbs of Paris. Mazzalai's older brother Branco joined the band on guitar when his band Darlin' disbanded in 1995. The group got its touring start on the French bar circuit doing Hank Williams and Prince covers to drunken audiences. Two years...
