The last of the great Hollywood classic studio Sci-Fi films

I was 10 in 1980 and fell in love with an LP story recording of this film. Many years later I would actually see the film and it would take nothing away from the experience. I recently bought The Black Hole on DVD and easily slipped back into that 10 year olds' skin. The I should have guessed that the soundtrack was composed by the same creative force behind the early James Bond classic film scores, John Barry. This soundtrack is still powerful, dark and brooding as ever.

Pretty, pretty great stuff

Bold, loud and adventurous. Too bad more films aren't scored like this anymore. Immediately evokes images of the film. And whether you like the movie or not, it is definitely memorable stuff.

Instantly memorable classic

Why is it that, as good as Hans Zimmerman and the current crop of Hollywood scoring composers are, I can't remember the score off the top of my head to most of the films I've seen recently? And yet, the mere mention of "The Black Hole" brings that theme, that eerie, haunting theme, instantly to mind? Barry was a genius.

John Barry was one of the best-known composers of soundtrack music of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, but his career carried him through a multitude of music genres and styles. He was best-known in film in connection with his work on the James Bond pictures, but Barry was also the holder of five Academy Awards, none of them for the Bond movies. Born Free (for which he won Oscars for Best Score and Best Song), The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa, and Dances with Wolves are hardly unknown films...
