Album Review

Springsteen has adopted his own set of criteria for his first Greatest Hits album. He packs as much music onto a single disc as possible, even if that means editing songs. He is more interested in including his recent material than his older material. He has not felt bound to interpret the album's title to mean he must include his most successful singles: Top 40 hits are left off, while album tracks are included. He has opted to include a couple of new songs, a previously unreleased outtake ("Murder Incorporated"), and a new recording of a previously unreleased old song. All of which is to say that Greatest Hits is a hodgepodge. Nevertheless, some of Springsteen's best and best-known hit recordings are here.

Customer Reviews

Wouldn't Recommend It.

Bruce Springsteen is a great musician but this CD isn't your best choice if you want to start getting into Bruce. They completely missed any songs from his first two albums (which are just as good as Born to Run and others), and they miss all the good songs from the albums that they did include. Where's "Blinded By The Light", "Saint In The City", "New York City Serenade" or any of those? They even missed such obvious hits such as "Jungleland" and "Backstreets", or songs like "Racing in The Streets". Sure, it has the obvious hits, but it isn't the best introduction to Bruce's catologue, "The Essential Bruce Springsteen" would be a FAR better choice.

In the decades following his emergence on the national scene in 1975, Bruce Springsteen proved to be that rarity among popular musicians, an artist who maintained his status as a frontline recording and performing star, consistently selling millions of albums and selling out arenas and stadiums around the world year after year, as well as retaining widespread critical approbation, with ecstatic reviews greeting those discs and shows. Although there were a few speed bumps along the way in Springsteen's...
