Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F, BWV. 1047: I. (Allegro)
The solo trumpet player of the concertino in this recording has a very 'unique' tone. It is very 'piggish' and at times sounds like an oinking pig. I am very unimpressed with the level of the tone. Being a trumpet player myself, the player's technique is very good, but relative to the ears, it isn't pleasant at all. The note quality is on the brink of splitting, or 'cacking' if you will.
Natural horns, natural trumpet
What a great recording-- it is a rare treat to hear the first three Brandenburg concerti played on baroque period instruments. It is wonderful to hear #1 played with natural horns, and truly amazing to hear the natural trumpet perform in #2 (one of the most virtuosic pieces in the trumpet repertoire, usually performed on piccolo trumpet). The tempo of the 2nd mvt of #3 is also pretty incredible! The Orchestral Suite No.1 nicely balances this recording. All in all, recommended listening!
