iTunes Review

Dave Matthews is one of those performers who often reworks his material onstage. Fans have come to expect some radical transformations and this collection, recorded with long-time collaborator Tim Reynolds, does not disappoint. Recorded at Planet Hollywood’s Theater for the Performing Arts, Live In Las Vegas expands on songs from every aspect of his career. “Dancing Nancies” and “Typical Situation” from his major label debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, come across beautifully in these smaller arrangements. Despite the absence of his full band, Matthews, with Reynolds’ help, capably fills the space with dazzling instrumentation that only misses the band’s rhythmic attack — and even that is willfully sacrificed for the intricate weaving acoustics of “Squirm.” (Many tracks are from Matthews’ last DMB album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.) The acoustic instrumental version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” is admirable.

How could you be disappointed?

The Dave Matthews Band is one of the few groups that can have the same title tracks on multiple live albums and grab your attention with a unique twist every time. Dave and Tim always have a great acoustic set and with a mix of new and old tracks, plus added instrumentals such as "Kashmir," this is a worthy purchase!

A must-have

We flew down just for this concert - and we were there on the night of this recording! Live at Luther College was a big deal to me growing up, so to actually see Dave and Tim live was very special.

This album is yet another example of the beautiful acoustic chemistry they have. I really liked Tim's solo stuff this time, too.

You must buy this album!!

On par with other Dave/Tim albums

Dave and Tim's talent is unquestionable and it shines through again in this performance, but nothing seems to jump out at me. The sound and energy on Live at Radio City are much better. I recommend that album before this if you are a more casual fan of Dave and Tim. For die-hards: you'll love Live in Las Vegas.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Formed in the early '90s by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians -- bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and, initially, keyboardist Peter Griesar -- and the band built up a strong word-of-mouth...
