The Mellow Side of Opeth

Opeth have two sides, the fury of metal and the softness of progressive. This album enables Opeth to demonstrate their artistic side in offering album that has expanded on their progressive leanings with more use of instruments such as acoustic guitar and keyboards. Damnation feels like spring because the guitar work feels like the flowers blossoming in their beds and the rainy days which feel like the cold wrath of winter fading away. Windowpane is a killer song which has the feeling of the sunrising on a fresh morning creeping through the glass, then the song drifts unexpectedly into nocturnal beauty guitar solos with David Gilmour coming to mind. Opeth truly are masters of capturing the beauteous landscape of progressive metal and that every Opeth album has been a quality release.

As the group progressed, it was very common for an Opeth live set to fly in several different musical directions -- and an average song lasted no less than ten minutes. Impressed by their originality, Candlelight Records released their debut full-length in 1995, which was titled Orchid, and featured a rhythm...
