iTunes Review

After the full-scale abrasions of the Steve Albini-produced Rid of Me, PJ Harvey decided she needed a velvet glove to cushion her punch. She signed up U2 and Nine Inch Nails engineer Flood to helm the sessions and bring a luminous balance to her music. The result is, arguably, the finest album of her career. The tunes are still steeped in the blues. The title track and “Long Snake Moan” drive down to the Mississippi Delta with an electrified band in tow, while “Meet Ze Mostra” spits forth a Stooges-like grind. “Working for the Man” is a whispered plea that settles on deep bass and multi-tracked vocals that bring forth a David Lynchian terror. “C’mon Billy” crosses the Western plains with Polly Jean firmly in the saddle. But “Teclo” features the ultimate creep. The sound builds to a heady climax as the piano traces the circular guitar notes until PJ reaches catharsis. The album’s first single, “Down by the Water,” is a masterwork of obsessive tension. The album was a breakthrough for Harvey and showed the world her incredible talents in one quick, chilling dose.

Over the course of her career, Harvey established herself as one of the most individual and influential songwriters of her era, exploring themes of sex, love, and religion with unnerving honesty, dark humor, and a twisted theatricality. At the outset, she led the trio PJ Harvey, which delivered her stark songs with bruisingly powerful,...
