Album Review

Over the course of several hit albums, Christian girl group BarlowGirl established themselves as a successful crossover trio by mastering a variety of secular pop and rock styles and matching them to inspirational (but not always explicitly religious) lyrics. Often sounding like a radio-ready mix of Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, and Vanessa Carlton, the group appealed to an unusually wide variety of music fans. Love & War finds the Illinois-based act expanding its sound even further, incorporating influences from heavy rock and dance music. The opening track, "Come Alive," is driven by a straight-up disco beat, a driving bassline, and Killers-esque edgy guitars, while "Time for You to Go" finds the singers' smooth vocal harmonies and biting anti-mass media social commentary backed by a nu-metal-ish funky beat and thrashy drumming. "Hello Sunshine" is a horse of a different (bright) color, its jaunty piano, joyful melody, fuzzy lead guitar, and Bach trumpet blasts clearly influenced by Paul McCartney-authored songs from the Beatles' post-Revolver era. A diverse, engaging exercise in several different subgenres of Christian music, Love & War appeals equally to the CCM heart, rock muscles, and pop sweet tooth.

I totally love BarlowGirl's new album. I love everysong on the album, but my fav's are Beautiful Ending, Tears Fall and Sing Me a Love Song. They're great! Way to go BarlowGirl! God Bless!

Hard Rock/Ballad Combo

What an album! Such an unusual mixing of tough rock sounds and smooth serenades; Barlowgirl has a niche in this area. Of the upbeat songs, top two picks are Time for You to Go and Come Alive. Tears Fall, Beautiful Ending, and Love is Marching are moving ballads with their wonderful harmonizing. Good work, Barlow women!

Wow, Barlowgirl's new album is simlpy great. It's nice to know that over the past albums , they haven't changed their style much, in that they always harmonize voice, have meaningful lyrics, and switch between hard rock and ballads. My favourite hard rock songs would have to be Come Alive and Running Out Of Time. Softer songs such as Hello Sunshine, Love is Marching, and Sing Me a Love Song are some faves too. The only criticism I might have is that their sound is a bit too refined and perfect,as there's not much different to listen too, but it is easy to hear if you want something rock and a bit calming. The title being 'Love and War' I had thus expected to see songs based on either love or war, basically, with a sort of story to the whole album between songs, but I guess BarlowGirl meant something different. I would definitely recommend you buy this album!! 4 1/2 stars

After practicing, writing, and performing for a few years, the self-described "radical girls for God" found themselves at a festival with fellow Christian rockers Superchic[k]. The latter took a liking to the up-and-comers, even penning a song about them, helping BarlowGirl off of the side stages and into the spotlight. With a solid grassroots campaign and a single that gained momentum on Christian Hit Radio, it looked like their faith paid off. Their eponymous debut was produced by Otto Price (dc...
