iTunes Review

Traveling from Czarist Russia to deep space and back again, Crack the Skye is a conceptually ambitious ride to the outer reaches of progressive metal. Along the way, Mastodon unload pure heaviness. In just under 11 minutes, “The Czar” blends cosmic psychedelia and crazy-muscular sludge riffs. Far shorter, yet no less ambitious, “Divinations” opens with old-time banjo before cutting to screaming twin guitars and some of Brann Dailor’s most furious drumming. Needless to say, the rest of the album is just as powerful.

Customer Reviews

Beware early Mastodon fans...

Gone are the days of heavy chugging riffs and screaming gutteral vocals. This band has clearly evolved in to a whole new plane. Personally I love this album as I do all Mastodon albums, I always enjoy hearing bands grow up. Crack the Skye is much more melodic then previous efforts. Much more lyriclly driven and more inventive guitar riffs. Honestly, if you love Mastodon, check it out. I'm sure you will be pleasantly suprised. Also (Score) are just instrumental tracks of the album so you're not missing out too much should you choose to get the cheaper versions.

Probably the best album I've bought

This album is outstanding. From the low eerie melodies to the fast pace riffs and the vocals are impressive. Personally, I think that they could've been a bit heavier in a couple of their songs, but it's a change, and a change for the better.

A Masterpiece, and possibly Album of the Year

I never felt the need to get into Mastodon. I saw their new album on itunes, I read the reviews and it sounded like it was good. At first I thought, this is good, but I wasn't amazed. Then it hit me. This is the best album of the year! Mastodon has finished their 2112 and you need to get it! Oblivion: 10/10. Great start to an album. One of my favourites on the album. Divinations: 10/10 Also awesome song. Short, but oh so sweet. Love Brent's voice on this one. Quintessence: 8.5/10 Probably my least favourite on the album, but it ROCKS. The Czar: 10/10 Best song on the album hands down. Intro rocks and it only gets better. Ghost of Karelia: 9/10 Great song but not my favourite. This song does let you know the album never lets up. Crack the Skye: 9.5/10 UNREAL Song. The chorus is really cool how the vocals follow the guitar. The Last Baron: 10/10 Best way to end an album. With a epic 13 minute journey. This album is simply a must buy for any lover of rock, phsychadelic, progresssive, or metal. Good luck to the competition.
