Album Review

Unlike many of their pop-metal contemporaries, Night Ranger's early work has aged quite well, and this excellent 1982 debut is a well-kept secret of the genre. Dripping with hooks and irresistible choruses, "Don't Tell Me You Love Me," "Sing Me Away," and "Young Girl in Love" are simply outstanding songs. Anyone doubting the band's ability to rock out need only listen to the vicious bursts of "Eddie's Comin' Out Tonight" and "Play Rough." And despite offering the mandatory power ballad in "Call My Name" (which is actually quite good), the band rarely allow the album's intensity level to lag.

Lost in the 80s hair bands? Ah well!

Maybe I'm just lost in reminiscence of the 80s, but this was one of our favourite tapes (yes, cassette tape!) of the 80s. We were in grade 11 and still tying to sort out who was the best: AC/DC, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Helix, Def Leppard and such; and out comes this tape from Night Ranger. Pretty rockin stuff, with the obvious hits like Don't Tell Me You Love Me, Sing Me Away, and At Night She Sleeps; but there's also the catchy synth and riffs from the song 'Night Ranger', and we also knew a girl just like 'Penny' (with the same name even...). There was something different enough to this band to make us sit up and listen, but it still blended well with all the other hard/metal rock happening. Catchy, infectious, and if you keep listening you might ignore the big 80s hair! Of course, this record led to a couple more big hits of theirs like 'Sister Christian' and 'When You Close Your Eyes' (which I always thought was inspired by 'Call My Name'.

Featuring ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Brad Gillis and former Montrose keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald, Night Ranger was one of the most popular mainstream hard rock bands of the mid-'80s. The group formed in the early '80s in San Francisco; in addition to Gillis and Fitzgerald, the members included Jack Blades (vocals, bass), Jeff Watson (guitar), and Kelly Keagy (drums). After a few local gigs, promoter Bill Graham managed to get them supporting slots on Judas Priest, Santana, and Doobie Brothers concerts....
