iTunes Review

Shakedown is the third release by the Austin-based Hacienda. As with the band's first two albums, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys produces, and this time Auerbach cowrote all the songs. Unsurprisingly, some tunes have a Black Keys vibe to them. In particular, “Savage”—one of the best tracks here—and “Doomsday” sound like the Keys’ material with Danger Mouse. But it’s still clear whose album it is. Hacienda is an ultra-tight band gelled by years on the road (some of its members backed Auerbach while on his solo tour), and the group has defined its own version of punchy rock 'n' soul. Beefy, fuzzy bass lines, keyboards, and funky drumming lock in on every track, and the backing vocals are superb throughout. These guys know harmony. Hacienda also produces a sweeping range of guitar tones, from the gritty grooves of “Veronica” and “Let Me Go” (check out those backing ooh-la-las!) to the wiry and taut “Natural Life” and “Don’t You Ever.” Finely crafted and catchy, Shakedown is Hacienda’s third winner in a row.
