About TR/ST

The dark electronic pop project of Toronto's Robert Alfons, TR/ST began in 2010 after Alfons met Maya Postepski, also the drummer in the like-minded band Austra. Comparisons to Depeche Mode and Joy Division began with 2011's debut single, "Candy Walls," which was released by Sacred Bones and introduced TR/ST's mix of sinuous synth pop and deep vocals. Another single, "Bulbform," arrived before the duo's critically acclaimed first album, TRST, was issued by Arts & Crafts in February 2012. Soon after the album's release, Postepski left to devote her time to Austra's growing commitments. Early in 2013, TRST was nominated for a Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year, along with Purity Ring's Shrines and Grimes' Visions. New TR/ST music surfaced in 2013 with the digital single Heaven, and again in early 2014 with the singles Rescue, Mister, Capitol, and Are We Arc? indicating a more streamlined, dance-inspired direction. Joyland, which incorporated house and acid techno influences into the darker feel of TRST, arrived in March 2014. ~ Heather Phares
