Album Review

Crazed, immature, and gleefully enjoyable, Threebrain's debut record, Weeeeee!, is more of the madness they introduced with the title track's surprise success on the Internet. It's not for everyone, or even most people; their intentions are best described by a robot protagonist halfway through the album: "I'm not programmed to love, I must destroy you." Taking the thin-voiced wackiness of early Ween, cutting out the psychedelic drug influence, and replacing it with amphetamines, Threebrain offers short bursts of strangeness that fly by with little time to absorb them. Mostly singing about animals, robots, bodily functions, and incest, they have little desire to take the music the least bit seriously. But the songs are often well written, adding weird little bits that throw the songs into unpredictable directions before abruptly ending. Highlights include the title track's lamentations on teenage life ("gonads and strife"), the tense death anthem "Hypothermia!," and the hilarious young love tale "Schoolbus." Often going on nothing more than a chugging bassline and a keyboard drumbeat, this is an experiment in how much simplistic, immature strangeness one can take. But with its brief length and occasionally brilliant lyrics, it somehow succeeds and even delivers some memorable tracks. If nothing else, Weeeeee! provides several funny and short songs to throw at the end of mix discs in order to fill out the full CD.
