iTunes Review

Phoenix have returned after their 2009 smash hit Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. To follow that brilliant, award-winning release, the band concocted a delightfully varied collection of dizzy synth swirls and bubbling hooks. Bankrupt! is clean and crisp, with an abundance of synth-pop splashes. From the soothing and uncomplicated “Chloroform” to the bustling, uptempo dance anthem “Entertainment,” Phoenix effortlessly glide between time signatures and tempos with the signature synth-heavy hooks and charm that made them an instant sensation in 2009. Beneath the eclectic musicianship and Thomas Mars’ soaring vocals are effervescent melodies that make the tracks instantly approachable—while containing significant depth only revealed upon repeat listens.
